The Light Bulb Goes Off…”Wow this stuff really IS imortant!”

This past Wednesday I spoke at a State Conference about marketing and public relations strategies for nonprofit organizations. I have said in my previous entries that I do not know the old rules of PR, so it is hard for me to disagree with David Meerman Scott. I didn’t fully understand that there is such a gap between the people that follow the old rules and the people that follow the new rules until I spoke with people older than me at this conference.

Previously, I had just assumed everyone was adapting to the new rules and just struggling with the learning curve. I was very wrong. It was shocking to see just how little people knew about these new rules and because of this, I held up David Meerman Scott’s book and told every single one of them to go buy it. They didn’t completely understand why it was important to transform into this new age and that is why I felt it was so necessary for them to go read the book. Scott does an incredible job of not just telling his audience to go out and change into these new rules, but he explains just why they are so important.

One woman was recommending that the group go to the local school board and pass out flyers! They didn’t understand blogs, podcasts, audio news releases, etc. I am so glad that I had been reading Scott’s book and could educate them on these new rules. Throughout the session I would hear them say things referring to old rules that Scott wrote about in the book and I never really paid any attention to before. I think that because I am a young student and surrounded by people who are learning all of these new rules and adapting to them quickly, I was unaware of just how many people were so far behind.
